TAB Casino Algoa Cup Winner breaks track record as racing team triumphs over weather at Tab Fairview
GQEBERHA, South Africa – The weather gods did their best to upset plans for Algoa Cup Day, but a determined 4Racing team rose to the challenge, delivering a memorable nine-race programme on the Polytrack at TAB Fairview on Sunday after overnight inclement weather forced a last-minute change from the turf.
The day belonged to Anotherdanceforme, who claimed the TAB Casino Algoa Cup (Listed) in spectacular fashion, while the Konica Minolta SA Stakes (Listed) provided an equally thrilling result for its new sponsor.
With the racecourse buzzing, hospitality venues filled to capacity and families enjoying a host of off-track attractions, the meeting proved yet again that when the going gets tough, the Eastern Cape racing community steps up to the challenge.
GREEFF FINALLY CLAIMS THE ALGOA CUP
One of the Eastern Cape’s most storied races, with an honour roll stretching back to 1920, the TAB Casino Algoa Cup added another memorable chapter when Anotherdanceforme (Master Of My Fate – Destiny Dancer) delivered a landmark victory for champion Eastern Cape trainer Alan Greeff.
Greeff has collected just about every major prize on offer in the Eastern Cape, yet the Algoa Cup remained elusive. That changed when Mr P J Moor’s four-year-old filly, bred by Varsfontein Stud, produced another top-class performance under Richard Fourie to take the 2026 title by half a length.
Carrying 59.5kg, Anotherdanceforme not only secured the coveted trophy and finally ticked the box for Halo Stables, but lowered the track record from 120.15 seconds to an impressive 118.70 seconds. The daughter of Master Of My Fate now has 13 victories from 15 career starts, taking her career earnings to R1,674,157.
Greeff was delighted with the result and was quick to acknowledge the contribution of work rider Xola Jacobs, thanking him for the hard work he puts into the filly at home.
Anotherdanceforme’s victory also ensured the Algoa Cup stayed home for the third year running.
MARCHLAND DELIVERS A DREAM DEBUT FOR NEW SPONSOR
The Konica Minolta SA Stakes (Listed) offered a spectacular introduction to race sponsorship for Konica Minolta SA, whose team attended the meeting and were on hand for the trophy presentations.
They were rewarded with a thrilling finish as Mr Mervin Govender’s Marchland (Malmoos – Marcheline) produced a dominant performance to claim victory for trainer Kelly Mitchley and jockey Muzi Yeni.
Bred by Lammerskraal Stud, the three-year-old daughter of Malmoos extended her unbeaten run to five and took her earnings to R860,220.
A GREAT DAY, DESPITE THE WEATHER
The overnight weather may have forced a late change of plan, but the 4Racing team rose to the challenge, ensuring that the nine-race programme went ahead and that racegoers were treated to a full day of entertainment.
The racecourse was bursting at the seams, with hospitality venues full to capacity. Food and market vendors enjoyed brisk business, while the children’s entertainment — including a jumping castle, face painting and candy floss — kept younger racegoers busy throughout the day.
From two memorable feature-race finishes to a vibrant crowd and a successful welcome for a new sponsor, Algoa Cup Day delivered a fitting reminder of the resilience of the Eastern Cape racing community and the enduring appeal of a day at the races.
Which goes to show that even when the weather has other ideas, the racing gods still deliver the goods.
