Owner of the month – March – Michael Havenga
The Racehorse Owners Association is thrilled to shine the spotlight on Michael Havenga as our Owner of the Month, he was delighted when Diogenes won the WSB Hawwaam Stakes Listed race earlier this month, fittingly so, as this gelding is the son of Hawwaam and provided his sire with his first stakes winner.
Michael is currently involved with ten horses across a mix of ownership structures, including four individually owned runners, four in partnership, and two through the Bright View Racing Club Syndicate.
His horses are split between two major racing centres. His individually owned and partnership horses are stabled at Turffontein under the experienced guidance of Weichong Marwing, while his syndicated runners are based at Fairview with Tara Laing. Over the years, Michael has built valuable relationships with several trainers, including Brett Warren who trained his very first winner, Lake District, as well as Stuart Pettigrew and the late Gavin Smith. Notably, his partnership in recent years with Lucky Houdalakis included the talented Count Invicto, who was highly sought-after and later sold to Hong Kong. Michael was intrigued by the sport at a young age. From just 12 years old, he accompanied his late stepfather to early morning track work and visits to the stables.
Michael is an accountant by profession and a partner in an accounting and tax firm, which he runs alongside his brother. Despite the demands of his career, he continues to dedicate time and energy to racing as often as he can. Family plays an important role in his life, as he shares his journey with his partner Mandy, their children, and their four grandchildren.
When asked what he enjoys most about the sport, Michael’s answer is simple: the horses. Whether visiting them at the stables or experiencing the thrill of race day, he loves the adrenaline rush that comes with having a runner.
Among his highlights in racing, two victories stand out. Count Invicto’s win in the 2024 World Sports Betting Grand Heritage Consolation remains a particularly memorable moment, while a more recent triumph with Diogenes capturing the WSB Hawwaam Stakes ranks just as highly.
Michael believes that the South African racing industry has significant potential for growth. He emphasizes the importance of better planning and organization, particularly around race scheduling and communication with owners. He also notes the need for improved facilities and a more inclusive approach to attracting the general public, challenging the perception that racing is an elite sport reserved for a select few.
A member of the ROA for quite some time, Michael speaks highly of the Association, praising its professionalism and approachable nature. He hopes to see this same level of engagement and accessibility reflected more broadly across other organizations within the industry.
We thank Michael for his continued support and wish him many more memorable victories in the future.
