From the desk – November

Dear Member

As November draws to a close, I reflect with deep appreciation on a month defined by collaboration, recognition, and meaningful progress for our organisation and our industry.

Early in the month, the ROA and 4Racing demonstrated the power of strategic alignment through a joint activation at the South African Eventing Championships, hosted at Inanda Country Base. Several OTTBs proudly competed across multiple disciplines, showcasing first-hand how we can engage an entirely new and valuable segment of prospective racehorse owners, individuals who already hold a deep passion for horses and may now see themselves becoming part of horseracing too.

This activation served not only as inspiration, but education, underscoring the athletic versatility of the thoroughbred and the fulfilling second careers they can go on to achieve after racing. The highlight of the championships was without question the overall victory by Liam Emmett, whose thoroughbred, Big Parade, a gelding by Dynasty out of Flirtation, and a proud direct link to one of our sport’s greatest traditions with Flirtation herself being the winner of the 2010 Summer Cup (G1). This moment stood as proof that thoroughbred lineage continues to influence excellence well beyond the racetrack. Click here for more on this initiative.

This coming Saturday, Turffontein returns to the unequivocal centre stage. The 2025 Betway Summer Cup (G1) over 2000m commands national attention, with all eyes fixed firmly on our iconic venue. This is the biggest race day of our summer season, and a celebration of our sport at its finest. The programme features three additional graded races — the Jackpot City Dingaans (G2), the New Turf Carriers Merchant Stakes (G3) and the Ducat Africa Fillies Mile (G3). The Blu Voucher Carry On Alice Stakes (L) run over 1160m rounds off the feature races on the day with a card packed with prestige, talent, and opportunity.

I extend our deepest appreciation to Betway. Their continued commitment to this event not only elevated the Betway Summer Cup stake to a remarkable R6 million, but their generous initiative to award every groom caring for a horse in the final field a guaranteed R20 000 incentive sends a powerful message of recognition and gratitude. This extraordinary gesture acknowledges the heart and backbone of our industry, the dedication, passion and tireless care provided by our grooms. Their contribution is immeasurable, and we celebrate Betway for honouring them so meaningfully. Click here to meet the grooms.

This month we are proud to recognise excellence within our own ROA community as we celebrate an incredible milestone. We are delighted to announce that Craig Clucas has been awarded Life Member status of the ROA. An honour long earned, and when you read his feature story here detailing how far back his involvement in racing stretches, I have no doubt you will agree this is an absolutely deserved distinction.

Our ROA Owner of the Month may be new to racing, but his passion burns just as fiercely. His inspirational story is a testament to how racehorse ownership brings people together, united first and foremost by the pure love of the horse. Click here for more on Luca Martini.

On an industry level, change has also carried forward with strong purpose. The Special General Meeting of the National Horseracing Authority took place on 19 November 2024, where members voted overwhelmingly in favour of reform. A new constitution was adopted, and new board members elected in terms of the approved amendments. We respect this mandate for change and look forward to working constructively together for the benefit of all stakeholders in South African horseracing. Click here for more information on the new board as well details of the Annual General Meeting of the NHA set to take place on Wednesday, January 14th 2026.

It is with great sadness that we also learnt of the passing of long-time ROA owner and valued member, Sathanadha ‘Lawrence’ Pillay. Our sincerest condolences go out to his family during this extremely difficult time. His contribution to ownership and his love for the sport will be remembered with deep respect. As we prepare for year-end, please take note that the ROA administration offices will be closed from Monday 22nd December 2025 until Friday 2nd of January 2026. Contact details for hospitality and owner experience bookings will be communicated in our December edition of ROA Today.

I thank every sponsor, owner, trainer, stakeholder and supporter for your continued belief in our mission. This year has proven that collaboration strengthens the industry and honours all its participants.

I wish you all a safe, successful and inspired few weeks ahead as we wind down an exceptionally busy season and move toward the close of 2025.
