From the desk – September
A new season, a new chapter and plenty to look forward to
As we head into spring and look towards the summer racing season, there is a real sense of momentum across South African racing, and particularly within our own racing community.
September has been a wonderful month of connection, celebration and, importantly, looking ahead.
Our Heritage Day Family Fun & Braai Day was a lovely opportunity to bring members, families and friends together in the spirit of racing and community. It was also an important occasion for us to share more about Equora, 4Racing’s new Ownership Proposition, and the exciting journey that lies ahead.
We have now moved into the next phase of the Equora launch and are in the process of confirming memberships and preparing for the full launch in the coming weeks. There is a great deal happening behind the scenes, and I am incredibly excited about what Equora will bring to the ownership experience.
For me, Equora is about more than a new name or a new identity. It is about creating a stronger, more connected ownership community. One that welcomes new owners, celebrates existing owners and creates more opportunities for people to experience the excitement of being part of racing.
So, if you have not yet taken the opportunity to find out more, please contact us and keep an eye on your inbox. We will be communicating more information very soon, and I encourage you to get involved. Please also remember that the social membership is also a wonderful way to introduce friends and family to the world of racing and bring more people into the community.
You will also start to notice some changes in the way we communicate with you. We are working towards a fresh and exciting new communications format as we move forward, and I hope you will enjoy the journey with us. There is plenty more to come.
Celebrating our racing community
This month we also celebrate some wonderful people who embody the passion and commitment that make our industry so special.
Congratulations to all the winners and connections recognised at the 2026 East Cape Awards. It was a truly magical evening, wonderfully attended, and once again the Eastern Cape racing community showed its warmth and hospitality. It was a privilege to celebrate the achievements of so many people who contribute to the success of racing.
I also encourage you to take a moment to read our feature stories on Owner of the Month, Sandra Marks, and Life Member of the Month, Michael Leaf. These stories are an important reminder that behind every horse, every race and every achievement are people with their own stories, passion and commitment to our sport.
Looking ahead to feature racing
The racing calendar is now building towards an exciting spring and summer season, with feature racing stepping up a gear on the Highveld.
On 3 October, Turffontein hosts the Betway Joburg Spring Challenge Grade 2 and the Betway Joburg Spring F & M Challenge Grade 2, marking another important step in the build-up towards the summer feature season.
And, of course, the countdown to the Betway Summer Cup will soon be well and truly underway. With its 28 November date and this year’s Celebrate Summer theme, it promises to be another wonderful celebration of racing, entertainment and everything that makes a great race day.
But before we get there, I am particularly looking forward to seeing many of you in the Eastern Cape for Algoa Cup Weekend.
A Fairview Rise and Shine Breakfast takes place on Saturday, 17 October, following Friday’s racing at Fairview, with the Algoa Cup feature raceday bringing the weekend to a close on Sunday, 18 October. It is shaping up to be a fantastic weekend of racing, hospitality and socialising, and I hope members will take advantage of the opportunity to make a weekend of it.
Please save the date and watch out for further details.
Racing is moving forward
You will also see in this month’s newsletter some important news on the changes being introduced by South Africa’s racing operators, as well as an update on the South African graded race programme.
These developments are part of a broader movement towards a more connected and collaborative racing industry, and it is encouraging to see the various stakeholders working together on matters that affect the future of our sport.
There is certainly a lot happening and there is even more to look forward to.
As we move into spring and then towards summer, I encourage you to stay connected, watch your inboxes and make sure you are part of the next chapter.
Most importantly, if you have not yet joined Equora, please get in touch with us. If you know someone who loves racing, introduce them to us. Bring your friends and family into the community through social membership. The more connected our ownership community becomes, the stronger and more vibrant it will be.
We are excited about what lies ahead and we would love to have you with us for the journey.
I look forward to seeing you at the races!
