From the desk – October

As October draws to a close, it’s been a month filled with emotion, achievement, and anticipation across the South African racing landscape.

Last week at Fairview, we witnessed a truly inspiring performance as the outstanding filly Golden Palm stormed home to victory in what marks a remarkable start to her three-year-old career in the Racehorse Owners Association Stakes (Listed). It was a memorable day that reminded us why we love this sport, a perfect blend of talent, passion, and promise.

This coming Friday brings us to the Betway Algoa Cup, the Eastern Cape’s premier racing event and a true jewel in the region’s crown. The anticipation is high, and we look forward to another thrilling display of equine excellence as some of the country’s best line up for this feature.

Sadly, this month also brought devastating news with the passing of Gavin Smith, multiple Eastern Cape Champion Trainer and an exceptional human being. Gavin was more than a talented horseman — he was a true gentleman and friend to so many within our community. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire Eastern Cape racing fraternity. It was an honour to be at Fairview on Friday as fitting tribute was paid to this great man. October also marked the success of our first Rise and Shine Breakfast for owners, trainers, and other guests at Turffontein Racecourse. Under the iconic Johannesburg skyline, guests enjoyed the unique opportunity to watch their horses in early morning trackwork, followed by a delicious breakfast and warm camaraderie. It was a wonderful start to what promises to become a regular and much-loved feature on our owners’ calendar. Click here  for more information and some lovely pictures from the day.

Looking ahead, this weekend we host one of the most meaningful races of our year. The Allied Steelrode Onamission Charity Mile (G2) run over 1600m at Turffontein. This race embodies the spirit of giving back, supporting several charities across South Africa. We extend our sincere thanks to the sponsors, Mr Arun Chadha, Mr Warne Rippon and their Allied Steelrode team for their continued generosity and commitment to making a difference. Other feature races on the day include the Betway Graham Beck Stakes (G3), the TAB Starling Stakes (G3), the Allied Steelrode Yellowwood Handicap (L), the Allied Steelrode Golden Loom Handicap (L) and the Allied Steelrode Java Stakes (L).

We also proudly cheer on One Stripe, the South African-bred colt who takes up pole position in the Breeders Cup Fanduel Mile on Turf this Sunday morning at 01:05am (South African time). We wish all the connections the very best as he carries our nation’s hopes on the international stage.

Finally, members are reminded that The National Horseracing Authority has issued notice of Special General Meeting scheduled for 19 November 2025. I urge all members to familiarise themselves with the proposed new constitution and to ensure your voice is heard by casting your vote. Should you require any assistance or proxy forms, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our office on 011 683 3220 or info@racehorseowners.co.za

Looking forward to later in the month of November, the Betway Summer Cup Day promises to be one of Joburg’s most exciting events. Experience the adrenaline on the track and the vibes off it, our monthly lucky draw competition closes early this month, so please get your entries in as we will be giving away 3 sets of 2 tickets to the Summer Garden on Betway Summer Cup Day 29 November 2025.
