From the desk – July
Dear Members
As we draw the curtain on another thrilling South African horseracing season, I’d like to take a moment to thank each and every owner, trainer, jockey, groom, work rider, punter and supporter who continues to breathe life into our sport. The passion and commitment shown throughout the year, both on and off the track, have been nothing short of inspiring.
We were deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Barend Botes this week as well as Sue Pieters earlier during the month of July. Both were respected and cherished members of our horseracing family, and their loss is felt across the industry. Our thoughts are with their loved ones during this difficult time.
We also mark the end of an era with the retirement of legendary jockey Piere “Striker” Strydom. One of the finest jockeys South Africa has ever produced, Piere’s unmatched skill, racing instinct, and longevity have earned him iconic status in our sport. We salute his extraordinary career and wish him the very best in the exciting journey ahead.
A major highlight of the month was undoubtedly the Hollywoodbets Durban July, and I want to extend warm congratulations to Hollywoodbets and the team at Race Coast for hosting such a spectacular day. It was a true celebration of horseracing and South African culture and a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion that goes on behind the scenes to deliver a day that not only celebrates racing but also captivates the broader public.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our ROA Rise and Shine Winter Breakfast at Randjesfontein. With over 120 guests in attendance, the event showcased the spirit and camaraderie that define our racing community and reaffirmed our shared commitment to the future of the sport. Looking ahead, I’m excited to share that a bold, refreshed Owner Value Proposition is taking shape for the new season. This will build on the momentum we’ve already started through recent initiatives and collaborations with 4Racing. We aim to enhance the ownership journey through expanded experiences, deeper engagement, and added value. These upcoming events and activations are designed to enrich your ownership journey and make being a part of this community more rewarding than ever. Please keep an eye on your inbox as invoices for ROA renewals will be sent out during the course of next week. Should you not receive your invoice for membership fees, kindly contact catherine@racehorseowners.co.za and she will assist you. Membership fees are due by 31 August 2025; however, we are pleased to inform you that we are offering a 10% discount on early payment and to qualify for this offer kindly settle the account by the 7th of August 2025.
Sunday, 27th of July is World Pool Gold Cup Day and this feature raceday at Hollywoodbets Greyville is the culmination of our 2024/2025 feature racing season. While the actual last race meeting of the season takes place on Thursday 31 July at the Vaal Racecourse, many potential Equus champions are in action on Sunday in an attempt to enhance their chances in taking home that prestigious honour. The Equus Awards will take place on Thursday, August 14th. This annual occasion is always a special one, and this year promises to be equally memorable. Click here for the latest information.
On the achievement front, we offer hearty congratulations to Laurence Wernars, who has officially broken his personal record for wins in a season—with the potential for even more to come. Likewise, we applaud Hollywood Racing for reaching 125 winners and surpassing their previous record. Both milestones speak to immense planning, passion, and performance. With a few days still left in the season, we wish both teams continued success as we close out the 2024/2025 racing year.
As we close off this season, I am pleased to announce the induction of four esteemed patrons as Life Members of the ROA. This recognition reflects their outstanding contribution and long-standing support of South African racing. We thank them sincerely for their dedication. Congratulations to Chris Haynes, Derek Michael, Johan Pronk and JJ van der Linden.
Finally, on behalf of the entire racing community, I offer our warmest congratulations to legendary trainer Mike de Kock on his induction into the South African Hall of Fame. This is an unbelievable and richly deserved honour, celebrating a career that has not only shaped the sport locally and internationally but continues to inspire generations. Click here for more.
As we look to the new season, a key date on the horizon is the BSA 2-Year-Old Sale taking place on the 20th and 21st of August. The ROA will be present, and we warmly invite you to visit us at the sale as we can’t wait to engage with you, connect, and share in the excitement of what lies ahead.
Here’s to the season past, and to the energy, ambition, and opportunities of the new one still to come.
