From the desk – May

Dear Members

Welcome to the May edition of ROA Today.

As we look back on the month of May, it’s heartening to reflect on the positive strides we’ve made. It has been a month filled with memorable events, inspiring achievements on the track, and important initiatives that have underscored our commitment to excellence in the world of horseracing in South Africa. The recent announcement of the new coastal racing operator was celebrated at the official launch of the Race Coast brand during this week in Durban. This new brand has developed from the merger of Gold Circle’s operations in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape-based Cape Racing, united under the Hollywoodbets banner. We wish the Race Coast team all the very best going forward, as their success, as well as that of 4Racing, ultimately creates a sustainable future and vibrant industry for South African racing as a whole.

On the Highveld, the encouraging news continued with the announcement of new developments in 4Racing owner and trainer incentives. We understand the vital role that both owners and trainers play in the racing community and these incentives not only foster loyalty but also encourage increased participation in events. The ROA welcomes these incentives and will continue to work together with 4Racing on potential new and innovative programmes for owners and trainers that further aim to reward their dedication and commitment. The champions of the Highveld were celebrated at the Highveld Feature Season Awards at a special event held in the newly refurbished Aquanaut Room at Turffontein Racecourse on Saturday 17 May. I must congratulate all of the winners involved in what was a competitive and exciting Highveld Feature Season, their dedication and passion for the sport as well as their remarkable achievements continue to inspire us all. Special mention also goes out to the 4Racing team for hosting such a wonderful event. Click here for more on our champions, both human and equine as well as a photographic review of the evening.

In an effort to enhance the overall experience for our patrons and participants, we are thrilled to give further information on the new event venue and restaurant at Randjesfontein. This newly renovated facility is designed not only to host racing and non-racing events but also to serve as a community hub where our members can gather, celebrate, and enjoy great food. We invite everyone to come and explore what we believe will be a game-changer for our social scene. Please keep an eye on your inboxes for an invitation to an event at the new venue in the coming weeks where we will have an opportunity to mingle and enjoy some quality hospitality. Our monthly lucky draw is a R1000 voucher for the restaurant, so please click here for details on how to enter. Click here for more details on the restaurant as well as an information sheet on event space opportunities.

This month, we proudly launched several initiatives in honour of Workers’ Day, particularly focusing on grooms and stable hands who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Their dedication is often overlooked, but their contribution is invaluable to the success of our racing. Through these initiatives, we aim to recognize their hard work and provide support that enhances their working conditions and overall well-being. Click here for a short summary of the workshops held as well as our expected outcomes.

In closing, May has proved to be a month of constructive progress and innovation behind the scenes, much of which we will be sharing in the coming months. I want to express my gratitude to each of you for your continued dedication and passion for our sport and towards the Association. Together, we are creating a vibrant future for racing throughout our community. Here’s to more accomplishments in the months to come!
