East Cape Horse Care Unit Charity Race Day

The atmosphere at Fairview Racecourse in Gqeberha was vibrant and uplifting on 20 March 2026, as the annual East Cape Horse Care Unit Charity Race Day proved to be a resounding success. The event brought together sponsors, racing enthusiasts, and a shared spirit of generosity, all united in support of a worthy cause.

An outpouring of support was received from across the racing community, with numerous sponsors stepping forward to contribute towards the welfare of horses in need. Carla from the East Cape Horse Care Unit, along with sponsor organizer Dorrie Sham, expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the incredible generosity shown on the day. Stud farms, bookmakers, owners, trainers, equestrians, and numerous racing-affiliated brands and individuals have rallied behind the initiative by sponsoring and donating through the purchase of “bricks” building a symbolic Wall of Welfare.

Donations reached an impressive total of R442,500, which is a testament to the continued compassion and commitment within the industry.

Among the sponsors were Mining Pressure Systems, Narrow Creek Stud, New Turf Carriers, Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein, Ridgemont, Hollywoodbets, Bryanston Auctioneers, World Sports Betting, 4Racing, The Racehorse Owners Association and Pauline Herman Photography.

Adding to the excitement, the race programme featured two Listed races that showcased exceptional talent. Muzi Yeni partnered with trainer Kelly Mitchley to secure victory in the Hollywoodbets Supports ECHCU East Cape Sprint Cup aboard Anuschka’s World, while Richard Fourie and Alan Greeff claimed top honours in the Bryanston Auctioneers East Cape Guineas with the impressive filly, Anotherdanceforme.

The Racehorse Owners Association added a thoughtful touch with beautifully decorated cupcakes featuring the logos of each sponsor, while the East Cape Horse Care Unit hosted an auction offering a variety of desirable prizes, further boosting fundraising efforts.

Overall, it was a memorable day in Gqeberha filled with thrilling racing, generous contributions, and a warm sense of community, all in aid of an important and compassionate cause.
