From the desk – December
Dear Member
As we draw the curtain on another extraordinary year in racing, December feels like the perfect moment to pause, reflect and celebrate all that makes this industry so special. It has been a year of passion, perseverance, progress and above all, people, and there is no better way to capture that spirit than through the incredible moments we have shared over the past few weeks.
The festive season got off to a spectacular start on Betway Summer Cup Day, which once again delivered everything we love about racing at the Big T. From the moment the gates opened, the atmosphere was electric with vibrant crowds, exhilarating racing and a sense of occasion befitting one of Gauteng’s premier race days. The standard of competition was exceptional, and the energy on course reminded us why this race holds such a special place in our sporting calendar. Click here for a review of the day.
Congratulations go to Mocha Blend, a deserved and thrilling winner of the Grade 1 Betway Summer Cup, owned by Mauritzfontein (Pty) Ltd. We were delighted to celebrate not only this lovely filly by Ideal World, but also her owner, Jessica Jell, Mauritzfontein’s nominee and our ROA Owner of the Month. Jessica’s passion for racing, thoughtful insights and genuine love for the sport was a joy to capture in our conversation with her, and we encourage members to read her interview here. It perfectly reflects the heart of ownership and the people who drive our industry forward.
As the season rolls on, our focus now turns to the Vaal Racecourse this Saturday for the annual running of the World Sports Betting Grand Heritage over 1475m. This historic race always provides a compelling contest and a wonderful day’s racing, and we look forward to another competitive field and strong on-course support.
Adding to the excitement at the Vaal is the opening of the newly refurbished 2nd floor hospitality suite, fittingly named The Empress Club, in honour of the Galloping Goldmine herself, a champion former Vaal Training Centre resident. This beautiful new space represents more than just an upgrade, it is a symbol of our commitment to enhancing the ownership experience and creating environments where owners feel welcomed, valued and celebrated. We are excited for members to enjoy this new facility and make many memorable race days there in the years to come.
One of the most moving and inspiring moments of the month was being honoured to attend the Workriders’ Graduation Ceremony at James Maree’s Thoroughbred Racing Development Centre. This initiative continues to play a vital role in developing skills, creating opportunity and shaping the future of our sport. The pride, determination and gratitude on display from the graduates was truly humbling. A sincere thank you to Racing Today, who were on site to capture the essence of the day so beautifully. We encourage everyone to watch their footage and share in this powerful reminder of what racing can achieve beyond the track. Please click here for the full article and link to the episode.
The ROA was also absolutely thrilled to host our final Rise and Shine Breakfast of the year at Vaal Racecourse on Friday, 12 December. What a wonderful way to close out the year. As the sun rose over immaculate tracks, with horses already out exercising and the early morning light casting a golden glow across the course, it was a moment that perfectly captured the magic of racing.
These breakfasts have become a cherished platform for connection, conversation and community, and this final gathering was no exception. Thank you to everyone who joined us, your continued support is what makes these events so meaningful. Please click here for pictures and more on this wonderful morning spent out at the Vaal.
As we reflect on the year that was, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributes to our racing community, from owners, trainers, jockeys, breeders, grooms, workriders, officials, administrators, sponsors, media partners to the many dedicated individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Whether on the track or off it, your passion and commitment are the backbone of this industry.
Racing is not just about winners and trophies; it is about relationships, resilience and shared moments that stay with us long after the last race is run. This year has reminded us of the power of collaboration, the importance of progress and the enduring strength of our community.
As we look ahead to 2026, we do so with optimism, renewed energy and a clear sense of purpose. On behalf of the ROA, I wish you and your loved ones a joyful festive season, a restful break and continued success in the year ahead. Thank you for being part of this journey, we look forward to building the future of racing together.
