National Horse Trust
The Highveld Horse Care Unit is one of South Africa’s largest equine welfare organisations. It operates from its base in Meyerton and its work will be well known to many members. The HHCU is dedicated to ensuring the welfare of all equines in Gauteng and the surrounding provinces. Its key activities include; investigating and resolving cases of cruelty and neglect, owner education, hospitalisation and treatment and the conduct of outreach clinics in rural and township areas. There is also a programme to accept and rehome thoroughbreds off the track. Further information on their activities is available on their website (www.horsecare.org.za) and Facebook page (Highveld Horse Care Unit).
In common with other welfare organisations, funding is a continual challenge. HHCU is fortunate in receiving significant support from corporates and individuals, some of whom are involved in the racing industry. There are many other fund-raising initiatives to tap into alternative sources of revenue. The recent closure of The National Horse Trust’s office in Turffontein was a result of its inability to raise sufficient income to cover its costs. The Trust remains in place to receive donations for distributions to the horse care units (Highveld, Coastal and Eastern Cape) and to fulfil a liaison role for these entities.
HHCU is structured as a non-profit organisation in terms of the Companies Act. Another challenge is to ensure the Board of this company is adequately resourced to fulfil its governance and oversight role. Should any members be interested in assisting in this regard they are urged to contact the Chairman, John Awbrey (082 453 1861) or the Managing Director, Theresa Hodgkinson (064 903 7910). It goes without saying that donations and support from members will be gratefully received. Banking details are available on their website and donations are tax deductible and Section 18A certificates can be issued.
