Owner of the month – February – Quentin Koekemoer
The Racehorse Owners Association is thrilled to present Quentin Koekemoer as our Owner of the Month. Since entering the world of thoroughbred racing in February 2024, Quentin has embraced the sport with remarkable passion and commitment. Though relatively new to racing, his involvement reflects the enthusiasm and drive of a seasoned owner.
Quentin is currently involved with an impressive string of 26 horses which include 11 two-year-olds, 13 actively racing, and two on the farm for breeding, all of which he owns outright. His horses are stabled at Turffontein under the experienced guidance of trainer Weiho Marwing. Quentin values the close working relationship they share, noting how much he appreciates being kept informed and involved in the day-to-day management of his horses. Before settling at Turffontein, he was introduced to racing by Brett Webber, trainer at the Vaal.
Outside of racing, Quentin is a successful businessman. Together with his wife and children, he runs an insurance brokerage, and he is also involved in manganese mining operations in the Northern Cape. Despite his demanding professional life, racing remains a true passion.
A devoted family man, Quentin treasures time spent with his loved ones. The family enjoys weekends at their home at the Vaal, and they are currently renovating their farm in Kromdraai, which will soon house horses. His daughter’s participation in show jumping originally sparked his deeper connection to horses, and that love has naturally extended into thoroughbred racing. Race days are often a family affair, with his wife Wilma by his side, enjoying the racing and a relaxed lunch together.
When asked what he enjoys most about the sport, Quentin speaks passionately about “the brute force of these majestic animals.” The horse always comes first. He thrives on the thrill of raceday but equally values the daily involvement and the partnership with his trainer that keeps him close to the action.
His most memorable victory to date came on the 11th of January 2026, when Navajo Nation claimed a Pinnacle Stakes Race victory at the Big T, defeating the well-fancied Olivias Way. Another outstanding performance by the son of The United States was just later that month, on World Sports Betting Cape MET Day, where he ran a marvelous race finishing 2nd in the Grade 3 New Turf Carriers Western Cape Stayers race.
As a member of the ROA since 2024, Quentin speaks highly of his experience. He appreciates the friendly and professional environment, the communication, and the visible effort to elevate the racing experience this season.
Looking at the broader industry, Quentin believes South African racing has strong foundations but requires greater support and incentives, particularly for owner-trainer combinations. As a newer owner, he recognises how challenging and costly it can be to compete at a serious level. Encouragingly, he feels there has already been improvement from last season and remains optimistic about the future.
We would like to thank Quentin for his continued support and wish him great victories for his journey in racing.
