From the desk – February

Dear Member

As we draw February to a close, we do so on the eve of one of the Cape season’s most anticipated highlights, the Lucky Fish Cape Derby, to be run at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth this Saturday. This raceday marks the culmination of a competitive Cape season, showcasing the quality of racing in the region. We extend our best wishes to all owners and connections for what promises to be a memorable afternoon.

The ROA hosts its 27th Annual General Meeting on Monday, 16 March at 10:00am, in person, at Turffontein Racecourse. The Annual Report including the Notice of Meeting and Proxy Form was distributed to members during this past week. For ease of reference, the Chairman’s Report is included in this newsletter for Members’ consideration ahead of the meeting. For those who are unable to attend please do send your proxy forms through to Caroline@racehorseowners.co.za

Among the resolutions to be presented at the AGM is the appointment of Mr Andrea Puggia as a Director of the ROA. Mr Puggia has been nominated to replace Greg Kotzen, who has resigned from the Board upon reaching the conclusion of his five-year term of office, in accordance with the provisions of the Memorandum of Incorporation. On behalf of the Association and its members, we extend our sincere appreciation to Greg for his dedicated service over the past five years. Greg’s support, insight and steady contribution over this period have been greatly valued. We thank him wholeheartedly for the time, energy and care he has invested in the Association and its Members.

Subject to Members’ approval at the AGM, we are confident that Andrea will bring continuity, insight and constructive engagement in assuming this role. Members may click here for more information on Andrea Puggia.

We once again remind owners and patrons of the parade ring accreditation requirements at Turffontein Racecourse. Access to the parade ring is subject to valid accreditation, compliance with the prescribed dress code and the presentation of the correct credentials upon entry. These measures are in place to maintain appropriate standards and security, and they will be enforced accordingly. We appreciate your cooperation and you may find more details on the policy here.

Our attention soon turns to Classic Day on Saturday, 7th of March at Turffontein Racecourse, featuring three premier Grade 1 contests, the Wilgerbosdrift H.F. Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, the HKJC World Pool SA Classic and the Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic. Classic Day remains one of the cornerstone fixtures on our racing calendar and we look forward to welcoming owners and stakeholders for what promises to be an outstanding day of racing.

A stakeholder engagement session will be held at Turffontein on Tuesday, 3rd of March at 12:00pm. All interested trainers and owners are invited to attend for an open discussion regarding 4Racing’s recent stakes conditions changes implemented to safeguard the retention of all programmed races, regardless of field sizes, and encourage greater participation in those races. This is an opportunity to engage directly with stakeholders to discuss the rationale behind the decision, address any concerns, and consider practical ways forward.

Stakeholders wishing to attend are requested to RSVP to Bonolo Matebane on 065 996 1323 or Bonolom@4racing.com Kindly RSVP no later than Monday, 2 March at 10h00 to assist with venue arrangements.

On Friday, 20 March, the East Cape Horse Care Unit will host its Charity Race Day at Fairview. This event provides an opportunity for stakeholders and industry participants to come together in support of a most worthy cause. Horse Care Units perform a vital function within our industry, providing rehabilitation, veterinary support and responsible care for horses in need. Their work speaks directly to our collective duty of care and to the long-term integrity and sustainability of racing. Supporting these initiatives is not only commendable, but also fundamental to who we are as custodians of the Thoroughbred. Members can click here for further information on how to become involved, as well as to view the auction items that will be available. If you are unable to attend on the day but wish to bid, please contact Dorrie Sham, who will gladly assist with arrangements and all relevant information is included. We strongly encourage members to support this initiative wherever possible.

We are pleased to recognise our Owner of the Month, Quentin Koekemoer, and our Life Member of the Month, Alick Costa. This month’s newsletter also features an inspiring and encouraging story from Charl Pretorius in his Off the Record column, highlighting dedication, mentorship and the meaningful pathways being created for talented horsemen progressing through the professional ranks of our sport. Finally, I will be attending the Bloodstock South Africa Cape Yearling Sale this weekend. If you are there, please do come and say hello, it is always a pleasure to connect with members in person.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the ROA and your commitment to horseracing in South Africa.
