ROA and SAJA Collaboration at BSA Sale

ROA Lends Support to the SA Jockey Academy’s ‘Appie Leg Up Programme’ at BSA Sale Viewing Day

The Racehorse Owners Association (ROA) is proud to announce its support for the South African Jockey Academy’s transformative initiative, The Appie Leg Up Programme. ROA CEO and Academy board member Natalie Turner, alongside fellow board member Babongile Mkhize, will be joining the South African Jockey Academy (SAJA) at the upcoming Bloodstock South Africa (BSA) Sale Viewing Day on Wednesday the 2nd of July 2025, at Suncoast.

This collaborative engagement aims to raise awareness and generate vital funding for the programme, which is fast becoming a cornerstone in the academy’s commitment to equipping the next generation of South African jockeys.

Championing Opportunity and Inclusion

The Appie Leg Up Programme is a flagship initiative housed within the South African Jockey Academy. At its heart, the programme is dedicated to financial and developmental support for apprentice jockeys, with a particular focus on those from historically disadvantaged and low-income communities. By removing key economic and social barriers, the programme enables talented young riders to fully engage with their training, develop critical life and professional skills, and build sustainable careers within the racing industry.

A Call to the Racing Community

Both Natalie Turner and Babongile Mkhize bring deep passion and purpose to this initiative, recognising the transformative power of meaningful support at the earliest stages of a young jockey’s career. Their presence at the BSA Sale Viewing Day signals the ROA’s ongoing commitment to fostering diversity, opportunity, and long-term growth within the racing industry.

Attendees at the BSA Sale Viewing Day will have the opportunity to engage directly with SAJA representatives, learn more about the programme’s mission, and contribute to its continued growth through donations.

How You Can Help
