The Thoroughbred Racing Development Centre
The atmosphere was inspiring at the Thoroughbred Racing Development Centre in Eikenhof on Friday the 16th of August, as we gathered to celebrate the latest graduates of the Work Riders Programme here on the Highveld. This program, which has been a cornerstone of racing development in South Africa, continues to produce riders of exceptional talent, many of whom are sought after internationally for prestigious opportunities at world-renowned racing entities.
The Work Riders Program, expertly managed by James Maree, spans three months and may be completed over three crucial stages. Stage 1 is dedicated to balance, seat, and grip, laying the foundation for any aspiring rider. Stage 2 builds on this with an emphasis on basic work riding, while Stage 3 advances to more complex riding techniques, preparing participants for the challenges of the racing world. As James addressed the participants at the ceremony, he emphasized the importance of the work riders’ abilities and horsemanship and encouraged them to always do their best, as it is a true reflection of the talented riders South Africa possesses.
At the recent ceremony, we celebrated, not only the achievement of all the graduates, but also the significant milestone reached by four dedicated women who completed the course. Their passion and commitment were evident as they proudly received their certificates, marking their successful journey through the program. We are proud to honor them in true Women’s Month fashion. Congratulations to Elne Kramer, Annebell Robin, Carmen Kidwel and Malebo Mabokela on receiving their well-deserved accolades.
A particularly inspiring story emerged from this group, just four days after graduating, one of the work riders claimed his first race victory. Congratulations to Julius Horing who won the 4Racing Welcomes You Work Riders Maiden Plate (F & M) with Jaap Visser trained filly, Pernini Palace.
James Maree expressed his thanks to Mary Slack, The Racehorse Owners Association, 4Racing and the National Horseracing Authority for their continued support and he thanked his team for all their hard work and dedication.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the graduates. Their hard work, dedication, and perseverance are truly commendable. We wish them continued success and fulfillment in pursuing their dreams.
