From the desk – July

Welcome to the July edition of ROA Today!

This month I’m delighted to share our newsletter in an updated and more user-friendly version. This new format enables readers quick access to our website, where the featured articles as well as our monthly favourites, Owner of the Month and ROA Life Member features are now hosted. Other links on the website including “Become a Member” and “Book a Table” are now also easily accessible, as is the national fixture calendar for greater ease of reference. Please do let me know your thoughts on this new format and if you would like to suggest any new features which may enhance the monthly newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

July, being the final month of our current season, I’m delighted to invite members to renew their membership for the coming year. Please keep an eye on your inbox as invoices have been sent out during the course of this week. Should you not receive your invoice for membership fees, kindly contact catherine@racehorseowners.co.za and she will assist you. Click here more details on member benefits and I look forward to announcing some exciting initiatives in the near future. Membership fees are due by 31 August 2024; however we are pleased to inform you that we are offering a 10% discount on early payment and to qualify for this offer kindly settle the account by the 7th of August 2024.

Sunday, 28th of July was World Pool Gold Cup Day and this feature raceday at Hollywoodbets Greyville is the culmination of our 2023/2024 feature racing season. While the actual last race meeting of the season takes place on Wednesday 31 July, also at Hollywoodbets Greyville, many potential Equus champions were in action on Sunday in an attempt to enhance their chances in taking home that prestigious honour. The Equus Awards takes place on Wednesday 15th of August and will be held at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse.

A notice to members will be distributed in mid-August, calling for nominations as director to the ROA Board. The details of vacancies will be included in the relevant correspondence.

As we close off the 2023/2024 season, I am extremely honoured to announce that we have seven Members who have achieved Life Member status. We thank these Members for their loyal support over the years and look forward to honouring them in the near future for their commitment, not only to the ROA, but to the sport of horseracing.

Please note, for our Gauteng Members in particular, that all 3rd floor venues at Turffontein Racecourse will be closed from the 1st of August due to renovations. The 2nd floor venues will be operational, and Owners, Trainers, ROA Members and guests are invited to use the Furious Room, where booking procedures will remain unchanged. A Coffee Shop in Winners Circle will be open to the public. Please do keep an eye on your inboxes for further updates on renovations at the Big T.

In addition to our regular ROA Today features, please click here for more on the South African Jockey Academy Fun Run and Virtual Event, the World Pool Moment of the Day and the exciting Betway Summer Cup Theme Announcement.

In closing, and as I reflect on the season that has past, I once again want to thank all participants in the racing industry for their tireless work and support. Each and every person has contributed enormously to enable us to continue to race, day in and day out and we, at the ROA are extremely grateful. In looking forward, I would like to emphasize the power of partnerships and working together throughout the industry to amplify impact and create meaningful connections. By collaborating, we leverage diverse strengths and resources thereby fostering innovation and mutual growth. I believe in nurturing these relationships and that collaborations will enable the future success and sustainability of horse racing.
