Welcome to the April edition of ROA Today.

The Highveld Feature Season concluded on a very high note on April 27th where ‘The Championships Finale’ took place at Turffontein Racecourse. Turn to page 2 for details of the event as well as a look back at this exciting season. I am confident that the competitive and thrilling racing we have seen throughout the country during 2023/2024 will continue as we move toward the KwaZulu-Natal Champions’ Season, and I wish Gold Circle the very best over the remainder of the period.

The champions of the Highveld, both human and equine, will be celebrated at the Highveld Feature Season Awards on Saturday 18th May and a full review of these awards will be showcased in the May edition of ROA Today.

In May, we move to the Eastern Cape for more feature racing and the upcoming TAB East Cape Derby (L) to be run over 2400m takes place on Friday the 10th. The Dahlia Plate (L) is also run over 1200m on that day at Fairview Racecourse. We are looking forward to hosting our members and for a profitable day’s racing.

4Racing have made some positive announcements during the month of April regarding Stakes increases on the Highveld and in the Eastern Cape and further to these increases, the company has also announced encouraging new incentives for Resident and Raider Trainers as well as Visitor Travel Incentives. We take a closer look at these increases and incentives on pages 3 and 4.

Cape Racing announced this month that they would be hosting the prestigious Equus Awards for 2024 on Thursday, August 15th at Kenilworth Racecourse. Turn to page 5 for more information on the event as well as a link to the new website and this season’s latest points tables. We look forward to an exciting finish to the season and I am certain that the Equus committee will honour our champions in a manner befitting their achievements.

I’m delighted to confirm that the ROA has paid out over R1,2 million in ROA Bonus Stakes since the beginning of 2024. We have paid in excess of R770 000 on the Highveld and over R470 000 in the Eastern Cape. Please keep an eye on your inboxes over the next few weeks for an exciting announcement regarding Bonus Races for the remainder of the season.

During the month of April, the ROA conducted a roadshow at Summerveld in KwaZulu-Natal, in order to meaningfully engage with Trainers in that region on the ROA’s recently launched “Owner/Trainer Contract Template”. I must report that the event was well attended, and we received valuable feedback from the Trainers in attendance. I would like to remind Members that that document as well as the FAQ’s for Owners is freely available from the ROA offices at any time.

In closing I would like to thank all members of staff across the entire value chain of racing for their dedication and commitment to a successful racing season thus far. To everyone behind the scenes you are very much appreciated, and I look forward to continue to working with you into the future.
